My husband had a check up with his kidney doctor last week and while discussing his diet, he mentioned that he likes to drink iced tea. His doctor immediately said, make sure it is not green tea. We had not heard that before so when I got home I had to check it out. He is doing good otherwise by the way and the tea I make at home is fresh brewed and not green, thank goodness. I read many different articles but the information I found most useful was on Drugs.com. It seems there are many different explanations, but for us , obviously we have to follow the advice of his doctor.
Here is what I learned, green tea is made from unfermented leaves and has the highest concentration of poly phenol, which is a powerful antioxidant. It is useful for lowering cholesterol and raises HDL(good cholesterol). There are many studies done which link green tea to lowering your risk for cancer. The most convincing evidence for not drinking green tea is that every study I read stated that it contains large amounts of caffeine. It is also not recommended for pregnant woman, woman who are breast feeding, if you are taking a blood thinner, have heart problems or high blood pressure, any anxiety disorder and hyperthyroidism and of course kidney disease.
The main factor seems always to lead back to the high amount of natural caffeine in the tea. The problem with that is that caffeine can raise your blood pressure and of course make you anxious. Now for healthy people I am sure drinking green tea products are fine, but we had never been told this before (he has been on dialysis for 2 years), so I found this kind of interesting and another thing to add to the bad list for my husband. There are plenty of teas that he can drink so its not that big of a deal, I just wish we had known sooner.
